On March 20th the FBI released a public service announcement on the rise in fraud schemes related to the coronavirus pandemic. It focused on making the public aware of fake CDC e-mails, phishing e-mails for charitable contributions and even counterfeit treatments and medical equipment. In general, phishing attacks are nothing new. Cybercriminals have been phishing, or sending fraudulent emails purporting to be from reputable companies, colleagues, or vendors in order to trick individuals to download malware, or reveal personal information, like passwords, credit card numbers, and bank account details.
With so many people working from home right now that are cut off from their normal day to day work life, away from their IT department, possibly without dual monitors, trying to find some peace and quiet from the kids, and likely more stressed or anxious in lieu of so many changes, it’s a perfect time for hackers to test individual’s wits.
